How Researchers in Upstate New York used Drones to Improve Hemp Farming
Across the United States, drones are making farming more accessible. Since the 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp production in the U.S., farming of the Hemp quadrupled. Increasingly, researchers are exploring ways to gather more data about varietal performance, cultivate hemp more efficiently, and maximize CBD hemp harvests. CBD is one of the main products that hemp farmers are interested in. With the CBD industry expected to reach $23 billion by 2023, causing an acre of hemp to be worth up to $40K per acre. But the budding industry is still learning about hemp-growing practices.
Mechanical Testing Inc. (MTI Drones) an Authorized DJI Enterprise Dealer and Aerial Solutions Company based in Clifton Park, New York saw the need for drone technology to make hemp farming more efficient for farmers. With this in mind, they located local hemp farms and asked them to participate in a study. Without hesitation, multiple farmers volunteered to participate in the research study. Check out the full case study here!

LiDAR
Read now
Why are we discussing this? At MTI we have taken a liking to LiDAR technology because we have invested and used two types of LiDAR terrestrial based and aerial or Airbourne based systems. We have the Nextcore RN50 and RN100 Aerial LiDAR we fly on our Matrice 600 and we have the Leica RTC 360 ground based scanner. The Leica RTC 360 has 3D capability to document and capture 3D environments, improving efficiency and productivity in the field and in the office through fast, simple-to-use, accurate, and portable hardware and software. When we can supply our customers with a 3D scan virtual environment for construction it can immensely benefit the project. It can supply architects and engineers millimeter level accuracy of drawings in existing buildings where drawings may not be available. When they are working on upgrades or additions to the building this can save time and money for all trades so they can identify any potential issues before the building begins. For example, it is important to know where mechanical pipes are located to tap into or avoid putting another item in its way.
